This chapter introduces the Personal Proficiency Network (PPN), a constellation of factors and processes within the self-system that offers an integrated approach to optimizing students’ academic development. The chapter draws together a program of research and thinking that has evolved over the past decade and suggests an encompassing framework that links theory and practice. The PPN comprises (1) motivation and engagement, (2) buoyancy and resilience, (3) adaptability, (4) growth (personal best) orientation, and (5) interpersonal relationships and social support. In describing this network, the chapter outlines the importance of integrative approaches to conceptualizing academic development, describes the iterative development of the PPN, and details the conceptual and empirical bases of each part of the PPN. Taken together, the network offers an organizing framework for classic and cutting-edge concepts in educational psychology and extends current thinking about the factors and processes relevant to students striving to realize their academic potential.
