In this chapter, we focus on talent management (TM) and talent development (TD) in Russian business organizations. Since mid-2000s, TM has become one of the most important human resource management and development strategies of the majority of large Russian firms. It must be noted that in Russia TD is rarely considered a strategy or practice in its own right. Rather, TD is usually subsumed under the TM umbrella. A recent search on Yandex.ru (the most popular search engine in Russia) returned more than 2 million links to websites, articles, blog posts, and other entries, related to TM. At the same time, references to TD in business organizations are scarce, and are most often found in the context of broader discussions of TM. Therefore, our examination of TD practices is integrated with the discussion of TM strategies of Russian firms. Moreover, we use the term talent management and development, and an abbreviation, TMD, to refer to these interrelated practices.
