The authors in this chapter describe ways in which one teacher residency program, the Albuquerque Teacher Residency Partnership (ATRP), included boundary-spanning opportunities with PK–12 school districts, teachers’ unions, non-profits, national educational entities, and community groups. Each individual organization or role described in this chapter not only focuses on the goals of their own work and organization but also focuses on meeting the goals of other individuals from other organizations for the mutual betterment of all organizations. The ultimate goal of all boundary-spanners in teacher residencies is to recruit, prepare, hire, and retain excellent teachers for a local partner school district; in the case of ATRP, this partner district is the Albuquerque Public Schools. The authors present theoretical foundations for partnering with a focus on equity in teacher preparation, along with practical solutions implemented by ATRP working with community-based schools to ensure a pipeline of effective teachers prepared to teach specifically in those schools.
