First page of Community Colleges— A Metasynthesis of Literature on Black Males
An Overview of 40 Years of Policy Recommendations

This chapter presents a review of policy recommendations derived from investigations of African American male students in the community college. The authors’ used a meta-synthesis approach to examine recommendations from nearly 40-years of research (1971 to 2009). This study used data collection and analytic techniques similar to that of Turner, González, and Wood (2008). Fifty research documents were identified for inclusion in this study, including peer-reviewed journal articles, books chapters, and doctoral dissertations. These documents were annotated for primary research components (e.g., study purpose, questions, framework) and for policy recommendations. Emergent themes were identified using an ideas grouping approach. The authors’ identified policy recommendations relevant to high schools, community colleges, state policymakers, and the federal government.
