The main focus of this chapter is to suggest design principles that optimize problem-driven instruction with online social media, especially in Korean contexts. Online social media are new ways to improve participants’ interactive discourse by using web-based and mobile technologies. Collaborative learning with online social media is “an interdisciplinary research field focused on how collaborative learning, supported by technology, can enhance peer interaction and work in groups, and how collaboration and technology facilitate sharing and distributing knowledge and expertise among community members” (Lipponen, Hakkarainen, & Paavola, 2004, p. 32). Wherever this networked learning is implemented, for example, either in PC or smartphones, or on wikis or apps on smartphones, collaborative learning theory should guide practitioners and researchers to make the best decisions that promote desired collaborative learning.
