The development of the Metaverse in the digital age signifies a significant transformation of reality itself, not merely a technological breakthrough. In a fully or partially controlled virtual environment, the Metaverse offers new opportunities for civic engagement, economic exchange, and human interaction, redefining urban social spaces. This chapter examines the Metaverse as a transformative force. We will examine the ramifications of this digital transformation by drawing on an extensive review of the literature, with a particular emphasis on how it makes it possible to create and experience cities as dynamic, virtual representations of the real world, or “Virtual Model.” The transformative potential of this immersive digital ecosystem will be demonstrated through real-world examples of Metaverse applications across a wide range of activities, from politics and social relations to urban planning and commerce. The Metaverse promotes greater efficiency and adaptability in the face of technological advancements by fulfilling the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and facilitating the digitization of urban environments. Additionally, it encourages collective action and participation in decision-making, enabling people to participate in political, economic, and civic discourse in ways that were previously unthinkable. The ultimate goal of this chapter is to present a thorough understanding of the Metaverse as a digital alteration of urban social space, illuminating the ways in which it changes our way of life, careers, and communication in a world that is becoming more interconnected by the day.
