Chapter 18: Teacher Evaluation Through Inspection: The Point of View from High School Teachers in Cyprus

One of the developing sectors of education worldwide is the evaluation of teachers (Elliot 1996; Marshall, 1998). Teacher evaluation can contribute to the definition of effective teaching and productivity in schools. Effectiveness and production in schools is something that the educational community is trying to define in a continuous inquiry (e.g., Van Der Werf, Creemers, De Jong, & Klaver, 2000) without coming to a universal consensus due to cultural differences and the way each educational system operates. It is very important for every country, every educational system, and every school, as well as for every classroom, to define teacher and teaching effectiveness that is suited to their objectives, as this definition can contribute to more effective teacher evaluation schemes. The task of this chapter is to approach teacher evaluation in a particular school system in an attempt to inform teachers and administrators about how teachers understand their evaluation through inspection.
