One of the most important factors in expanding the use of service-learning around the world is strengthening the role of service-learning in teacher education. With more elementary and secondary students learning the value and process of service learning and community engagement, there is a greater likelihood that students in higher education will demand such programs and be more efficient and more effective in participating in community connected learning. One challenge for the last decade has been how to expand service-learning in teacher education to accommodate the growth in the K-12 sector and how to ensure quality experiences in such programs. Part of this expansion requires an answer to the question: What is the purpose of preservice education?
