Chapter 15: A Values Clarification Workshop for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Undergraduate and graduate students are faced with a myriad of exciting yet potentially challenging career development tasks as they progress in their studies and consider career options. Undergraduate students must choose a major, identify career fields, develop job search skills, and apply to positions across one or more industries. Some students must discern whether attending graduate or professional school is necessary to reach their career goals. Graduate students typically search for jobs within their area of specialization; however, some students must search fields outside of their discipline due to limited job opportunities or lack of satisfaction with their career choice. The college career center provides many resources designed to facilitate students’ vocational development throughout the academic experience. Career counselors play an integral role in assisting students with the career development process by conducting individual and group career counseling, interpreting vocational assessments, facilitating workshops, and teaching job search skills.
