First page of Triple Threat
Multiple Identities in the Academy

Every person’s story is unique. This inherent distinctiveness means each narrative enriches our understanding of the world around us. My story, like yours, has components that are shared with the narratives of others. As a Black woman in academia, I am part of a group with shared struggles and accomplishments. There are other aspects of my concept of self that intersect with my identity as a Black woman. I am also a member of the LGBTQ community and a first-generation college student from a rural, working class background. All of these identities impact my professional life. Based on what I consider my three main identities or group membership identifications, I am a “triple threat.” I identify as a woman, Black, and a member of the LGBTQ community. This has positive and negative implications depending on the context.
