The Education Act of 1944 provided the basis for the statutory continuous system of education in England, namely primary, secondary, and further education. At present, formal schooling is compulsory for all children between the ages of 5 to 16, with the possibility to extend the leaving age to 18 years in the near future. The Education Reform Act 1988 introduced considerable changes to policies and practices in English schools, including the following:
Central government is responsible for providing the education service within the state sector, for determining national policies, and for planning the direction of the curriculum and education system as a whole.
