In this chapter, the authors classify some communication styles as assertive, aggressive and passive styles to be utilised to defend people’s interests and respect the opinions of others. By applying an assertive communication style, one knows how to defend their arguments but understands and respects the other’s point of view. They will discuss the benefits of an assertive style and the characteristics of an assertive personality. Also, they will explore five behavioural resolution strategies in a conflict based on the following criteria: 1) a person’s desire to defend his interests and 2) a person’s desire to consider the interests of others. Assertiveness and leadership are corresponding points. To be an assertive leader is an important quality. Assertiveness is one of the essential markers of managerial maturity. Such leaders are confident, considerate, interested in the development of their employees and treat them with respect. They can achieve effective results, stand up for their interests and confront others without aggression and manipulative techniques. They will explore different leadership styles that can help to manage people. Being assertive is one of the critical components of a person’s well-being. Assertiveness, which includes perseverance and commitment to long-term goals, is crucial to personal success. A person with inherent assertiveness continues to move forward and work despite failures.
