In this chapter, I explored the process of educating my inner witness to enhance my understanding of students’ perspectives. Through the use of personal narratives to interrogate a moment of noticing, I expanded my potential actions to inform future responses. By employing an autoethnographic approach, key tenets from the discipline of noticing are extracted to illustrate how, as a developmental mathematics instructor, I supported productive struggle. This chapter emphasizes the importance of educating one’s inner witness to foster an environment supportive of students’ struggles.
