First page of Introduction

A Kentucky native and justice leader, bell hooks quite often leaves me feeling both humbled and appreciative each time I interact with her words. I am humbled by her brilliance and tenacity while simultaneously appreciating that, though I never had the opportunity to meet her, I am continually able to develop a better understanding of myself and of education through her words. She helps me understand myself in many contexts: as a Southerner, as an Appalachian, as an educator, and as a person who just naturally does not care to sit still. bell hooks was a mover, never complacent. She was someone who saw problems in complex ways, seeking solutions in solidarity with a diversity of folks.
