This chapter addresses teaching of academic literacy skills that non-traditional students may need in their Higher Education (HE) study. These students are, based on their life experiences, more likely to leave HE without a degree or are more likely to achieve below their potential. Yet these non-traditional students often possess powerful skill sets that are at first glance not directly relevant to HE - skills that they have been able to develop through various life situations, often ones of an adverse nature. We argue that literacy skills courses in HE can and should draw on skills such as resilience and everyday solving of challenging situations to empower students during their degrees.
