An increase in the utilisation of digital learning tools was prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, when much of the programme delivery at a UK university moved online and a need to engage students effectively in a different environment arose. This chapter draws on an action research study involving students on initial teacher education programmes to explore the potential contradiction between effective pedagogy in higher education (HE) and the reality of professional practice. It also considers the continued use of digital learning tools to promote student engagement and the impact this has on their emerging practice and professional confidence.
