Abstract
This reflection delves into the author’s journey as an academic emerging from a working-class background, highlighting the challenges and triumphs encountered along the path to establishing a science festival in the author’s local area. The author’s narrative begins in the settings of a working-class area (considered one of the most deprived in the United Kingdom), where the pursuit of academic excellence was often overshadowed by economic and social constraints. The author discusses how the author’s exposure to science and research opened new horizons for the author, allowing the author to see beyond the limitations imposed on the author. This allowed the author to see a wider world that is open to everyone, and discussions with children in the local area made the author realise that many of these opportunities feel non-existent to many. This awakening became a catalyst for wanting to give back to the author’s community. Hence, the author decided to run a science festival in the author’s hometown. This festival aims to make science accessible and engaging for individuals regardless of their socio-economic background and to show them a world beyond our town’s limits. This reflection not only shares a personal story of breaking societal barriers but also serves as a call to action for greater inclusivity in academia.
