Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are changing how we manage construction projects by improving scheduling, resource allocation and overall project performance. This chapter provides a summary of the current research and practices on the application of AI and ML in construction. Based on a systematic review of 16 key studies, it explores how these technologies help with project scheduling through predictive analytics so managers can optimise timelines and reduce delays. ML-driven risk assessments identify potential safety and financial risks before they get out of hand so managers can act proactively. AI can also analyse historical cost data to improve budgeting and cost control, and real-time decision support tools improve the precision and timeliness of management actions. Nevertheless, there are challenges – high initial costs, the need for good data and organisational resistance to change. This chapter concludes with practical recommendations for successful AI/ML adoption – effective data governance, targeted training and careful change management – to get the most out of it in construction project management.
