8: Whose Life, Immortal or Otherwise, Is It Anyway?

In this chapter examining Morna McDermott McNulty’s (2018) book Blood’s Will, the author works through curricular constructs embedded in a love story involving vampires and mortals. The recurring theme of vampires and mortals has been around for centuries, just as the study of curriculum is now and has been studied for hundreds of years. McNulty’s story is innovative as it presents curricular theory and understanding through storytelling, which allows for deeper engagement with the reader. Narrative inquiry is a relevant approach in which to present curriculum; it allows for re-conceptualization and understanding of the material hidden within the text. In addition, a love story—particularly one involving vampires—is both entertaining and thought provoking. This is of importance as the learner navigates through the currere method, as real-life and otherworldly theories collide.
