The exploratory empirical analysis in this chapter has two purposes. First, I identify, using data from the NRJV survey, covariates with the identified outputs and outcomes from RJV activity. In other words, I explore covariates with responses to the following questions:
Definitions of all of the variables considered in this chapter are in Table 6.1.
As reported in Table 5.4 based on Question Q29, 3.4% of the RJVs resulted in a technology that had, at the time of the NRJV survey, been licensed to another entity. Descriptive statistics on this variable, license, are in Table 6.2.
Question Q30 on the NRJV survey asks if the lead firm applied for or was granted a patent from a technology developed from the RJV research project, patent. Those lead firms that responded in the affirmative were then asked to report the number of patents applied for, patentapp, and the number of patents received, patentrec, at the time of the NRJV survey. In total, 23.9% of the lead firms applied for or received a patent (see Table 5.4), and of those 28 lead firms, the mean number of patents applied for was 1.6 and the mean number of patents granted was 1.0. Descriptive statistics on these variables, with the exception of patentapp and patentrec, are in Table 6.1.
