This chapter explores how the Wisconsin in Washington (WiW) program has and continues to exemplify “theory in action” by bringing together the Wisconsin Idea and experiential learning in the D.C. context. By immersing students in a city that has been instrumental in globalization, this education away opportunity gives students a learning experience which allows then to participate in the policymaking process both in the domestic and international spheres. This program is unique at UW-Madison as one of the few domestic options for students to participate in studying outside of the university. As the university has focused on career preparation, this D.C-based program provides the additional layer of being an academic internship program. This designation highlights the focus on integrating academics and professional development that students go on to apply long after the program. Through intentional course offerings, alumni engagement, and of course, location, WiW continually facilitates the Wisconsin Idea in practice.
