One of the recent changing dynamics within higher education is the student population. In previous decades, the “typical” college student was fresh out of high school, financially supported by their parent(s), and able to prioritize coursework and requirements above everything else (Irwin et al., 2022). With many institutions focusing on workforce development (Katz et al., 2021), colleges of education are finding a greater number of students who have larger personal responsibilities, reframing the notion of the “typical” college student. As these students matriculate through teacher preparation programs and enter student teaching, they will require new kinds of support that challenge the status quo, previous ways of work, and norms within the academy and schools.
