The higher education and student affairs (HE/SA) field has witnessed a notable transformation in recent years, with an increasing number of senior-level positions at the director level and above now requiring or strongly preferring applicants to hold terminal degrees. This shift has sparked discussion and reflection within the HE/SA community about the reasons behind this trend, the considerations that HE/SA professionals should contemplate when considering doctoral studies, and the timing and modality of such pursuits. Furthermore, professionals are faced with choosing between two distinct terminal degrees: the PhD and the EdD, each offering unique opportunities and career trajectories.

One of the prevailing reasons for the growing preference for terminal degrees in senior-level HE/SA positions is the realization of their significant benefits. Graduates with terminal degrees have specialized expertise and knowledge that can be invaluable in leadership roles within educational institutions. The compelling case for requiring or preferring terminal degrees in such positions has become increasingly evident throughout my academic and professional journey.
