This interview with Dembo Kanteh, Head of Strategic Partnerships at MRC Unit The Gambia and the President of the West Africa Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA), examines the evolving role of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within research management in West Africa. Kanteh notes that while institutional frameworks for EDI are emerging, the wider national context remains limited in scope and shaped by cultural and legal sensitivities. He identifies gender-related initiatives, such as supporting female scientists with childcare and maternity cover, as impactful practices. Kanteh underscores the importance of transparent policies, leadership training and dialogue to foster gradual, context-appropriate change.
