This chapter explores the critical role of spaces and places of recreation, leisure, and play in a knowledge society. In industrial societies, these activities are often classified as unproductive time. In contrast, they are vital to a knowledge economy. The authors consider the range of recreation and leisure places but also note their scarcity in some precincts and parcels depending on population density. The authors review the work of Jacobs and Marcus to highlight the importance of leisure places as third spaces. A public park serves as an archetype for applying spatial syntax analysis.
