Chapter 18: Knowledge Assets, Spaces, and Places for Performance

This chapter explores the critical role that spaces and places of performance play in a knowledge society. Performance has long been seen as a form of knowledge articulation, translation, and interpretation. At an individual and unprofessional level, performance is what people do in everyday knowledge moments. Professional and amateur places of performance are critical symbols, spaces, and places for knowledge expression, engagement, and learning. In this chapter, the authors consider how theaters, cinemas, concert halls and venues, opera houses, open-air amphitheaters, music rooms, and even impromptu stages in neighborhoods or warehouses are used. A concert hall is chosen as an archetype to explore the spatial syntax of performing arts places.
