Chapter 19: Sidewalks and Streets as Knowledge Spaces and Places

In this chapter, the authors consider the role of streets as a third space and place. For millennia, streets have been both community spaces and thoroughfares for travel. In industrial societies, streets were transformed to accommodate vehicle transport at the expense of public community spaces. In the 21st century, urban planners are returning to the mixed-use pedestrian–vehicle design principles. The role of sidewalks and pedestrian areas in streets is highlighted. The authors explore the type of knowledge assets we grow in pedestrian spaces, the types of knowledge moments and mobilities that are increasing, and where the design principles of industrial societies are reconsidered.
