Special section introduction

On behalf of the steering and organization committees of the joint conference INDS’11 and ISTET’11 organized in Klagenfurt, Austria (July 25-27,2011) sincere thanks are addressed to all authors for their precious contributions. INDS’11 stands for the Third International Workshop on Nonlinear Dynamics and Synchronization, whereby ISTET’11 stands for the Sixteenth International Symposium on Theoretical Electrical Engineering. I am also pleased to introduce this special issue of COMPEL which is presenting selected high quality papers disseminating innovative ideas which have been presented during the joint conference.

The idea of organizing a joint conference “ISTET’11” and “INDS’11”originates from the good match and the complementarity observed in their scopes. Indeed, the focus of the two workshops is specifically on the development of recent methods or techniques to analyze, understand, predict and control the complex and striking dynamical behavior of certain types of nonlinear systems,events, phenomena and circuits in electrical engineering, just to name a few.

Specifically INDS’11 is the third edition of the International Workshop on Nonlinear Dynamics and Synchronization which has been created in 2008 in order to bring together international researchers, developers and practitioners from different horizons to discuss the latest advances in nonlinear dynamics and synchronization. Since 2009, INDS is traditionally organized once every two years and serves as a forum to present current and future works as well as to exchange research ideas pertaining to various aspects in this field of nonlinear dynamic systems and synchronization. INDS generally feature contributions such as keynote lectures, invited papers, invited sessions and also include poster and demo sessions. Further, this workshop is particularly focused on both theoretical and practical aspects of nonlinear dynamics and synchronization. This involves various analytical and numerical approaches and selected thematic areas such as coupled oscillatory systems, nonlinear image processing, systems modeling, systems identification, nonlinear systems control, bifurcations,stability analysis, chaos control, cryptography and security, cellular neural networks and neuro-computing, computational intelligence, etc. Finally, the applications of these concepts in the design and optimization of real physical/technical systems are of particular interest.

ISTET’11 is the 16th edition of the International Symposium on Theoretical Electrical Engineering. This symposium has a long history as it was originally created by a group of experts in theoretical fundamentals of electrical engineering from universities of the former East-European countries with the aim of establishing a suitable platform likely to integrate and extend the scientific activities in the field of theoretical electrical engineering all over Europe. The ISTET symposium is traditionally organized once every two years since the first symposium that was held in Bratislava in 1981. Nowadays, the ISTET symposium has gained an outstanding reputation as a forum of experts involved in electromagnetic field theory, electrical circuits and networks, and modern concepts of system theory of electromagnetic systems. Specifically, the ISTET symposium is devoted to research and education in all areas of theoretical electrical engineering and its applications in electromagnetics, electrical circuits, signal processing and control of electromagnetic systems, among others. This 16th edition of the symposium features contributions such as keynote lectures, invited papers, invited sessions and also include poster and demo sessions. From the scope of this symposium we can outline a selection(non-exhaustive) of relevant topics: analytical, numerical and experimental methods/approaches with applications in electromagnetic fields, electrical circuits, networks and system theory, signal processing and identification,control theory, etc. The applications of these concepts in the design and implementation of real technical systems are also of particular interest.

The scientific contributions which have been selected through a thorough review process are ideas related to nonlinear dynamics and synchronization (INDS) and the theoretical electrical engineering including electromagnetic field theory,electrical circuits and networks, and modern concepts of system theory related electromagnetic systems, communications and control theory (ISTET).

We believe that this special section/issue of COMPEL does contain sufficient useful information and interesting ideas as well as some interesting open research questions/avenues to the wider research community.
