NHS chooses Ovid for KA24 contract

Ovid Technologies Ltd has announced that it has been chosen by the KA24(Knowledge Access to Healthcare Information, 24 hours a day, seven days a week)project board to provide a range of clinical information sources for use by all NHS staff throughout London and the South East regions of the NHS. The two-year contract will provide Web access to three major healthcare indexes, MEDLINE,CINAHL, and PsycINFO, with seamless links to and from thousands of primary articles published in leading medical and nursing journals. This gives NHS staff access to critical research information whenever and wherever they need it– 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from the library, the workplace or at home.

The KA24 project was established to build upon services developed by NHS libraries and education consortia to ensure a base level of access to core resources across the many sectoral and organisational boundaries of the two old regions. It is intended to support the widespread introduction of evidence-based medicine and facilitate government targets across a range of policy areas:

  • Realisation of the NHS plan.

  • Clinical governance.

  • National service frameworks.

  • National cancer plan.

  • Information for health/information for social care.

"This will transform the lives of busy clinicians and add considerably to their ability to deliver high-quality evidence-based patient care," said Michael Robson, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Chair of the Project KA24 Project Board. Barbara Cumbers, Electronic Resources Development Librarian for London, and Project Implementation Manager added "We are pleased that this contract has gone to Ovid because of the user-friendliness of the interface. The search features enable even novice users to obtain good results."

"KA24 is a strategic opportunity to integrate the latest knowledge and research into the working habits of clinical staff in the London and the South East NHS regions," said Jackie Cahoon, Ovid's NHS Partnership Development Manager. "Ovid Technologies is partnering with local bodies to encourage uptake and routine use of the knowledge base. We anticipate that future joint developments will offer access from the Electronic Patient Record, and from handheld devices. We will also be looking for opportunities to customise the interface and integrate it further with local information environments."
