Explores an approach to management training for the post‐professional through describing and evaluating a one‐year management development programme for medical consultants that has run for five years in England. The background, and issue‐based participant‐centred approaches, are presented before describing the specific features of the programme, namely: the planning (two days), the individual consultancy, the peer review and the monthly meetings. Presents results of the programme evaluation and recommendations for management development for post‐professionals arising from both this programme and a review of the literature.
