More women choose engineering and IT in Germany
More female students in Germany are opting to study engineering and information technology at university.
A study for the German Federal Lander commission for educational planning and the promotion of research reveals that women make up 21 per cent of enrolments for engineering. The number of women choosing information technology has also risen, from 1,000 in 1995 to 5,000 in 2000. Women now represent 18.3 per cent of information technology students in Germany.
Mechanical engineering has also risen in popularity among female students,who made up 18.5 per cent of those studying the subject in 2000. The least popular subject among women remains electronic engineering. Women make up only 9 per cent of students in this subject – but again, more women are choosing it than in the past.
The report concludes: "Young women are also choosing life sciences and interdisciplinary subjects such as health and environmental technology, textiles and clothing technology, interior design and media studies."
