In the following article, a brief account of the French industrial training system is presented, to be followed by an outline of the changing industrial structure observed in the Saint‐Etienne area, with particular reference to the adoption of new technology in manufacturing systems and observations concerning the local industrial training structure which has emerged to facilitate such changes. Concluding remarks contrast the French situation regarding continuing training provision with the relative absence of such provision in Britain.
