Over the past number of years, organisations have undertaken a variety of strategies to promote equality for women. Training has featured as a prominent part of developments in this area, and under this heading there have been two main types of initiative. The first is training, specially for women, in areas such as assertiveness skills, personal awareness and career development. The aim has been to encourage women to seek opportunities in what were perhaps non‐traditional areas for them. The second initiative is training for managers, both female and male, to increase their awareness of, and responsiveness to, equality issues. These two types of training have formed the basis for much of the effort to promote equality in organisations.
