The Business Flight Simulator

Employers are demanding an expanding range of skills and abilities from students of business and management. Pressure to provide them is growing as success in the commercial environment requires increasingly more versatile and adaptable individuals. A pedagogy for developing graduates of the appropriate calibre – a business flight simulator– is proposed. It begins by considering the perceived deficiencies of existing pedagogies and outlines the essential features of a superior alternative, briefly laying suitable theoretical foundations. Problems encountered during its evolution are discussed, indicating how they were resolved, and the concept of “holistic growth” explained. The perceived benefits of the pedagogy are also extensively examined. Finally, how the business flight simulator can be successfully incorporated into existing educational programmes is explained and a notional definition offered about what constitutes an effective business or management studies graduate.
