This study aims to explicitly investigate how “Business Intelligence” (BI) systems influence environmental sustainability in “Higher Education Institutions” (HEIs) by identifying and examining the key factors that contribute to BI adoption and usage.
An extended “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology” (UTAUT) model, incorporating human factors such as “technological competency” of IT staff and staff IT skills and knowledge, was tested. Survey data were collected utilising a convenience non-probability sampling technique from 427 management personnel in Jordanian HEIs. “Structural Equation Modelling” (SEM) was employed to analyse the data.
The findings confirmed the critical role played by perceived “performance expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions” on BI usage. As anticipated, the incorporated human factors were found to be highly influential in the degree of BI use; specifically, the “technological competency” of the IT staff and the staff’s IT skills and knowledge were identified to have a significant impact on BI use. Additionally, the results revealed a positive and significant correlation between BI usage and environmental sustainability in HEIs.
This study contributes by employing and expanding the UTAUT framework to assess the impact of human elements and environmental sustainability concerning BI adoption in HEIs. It fills a knowledge gap as it targets an under-researched thematic area in the context of Jordanian higher education, namely, the adoption of BI and its implications in terms of environmental sustainability.
