Last month Mr Wellens gave an historical analysis of how increasing industrial sophistication upgrades the labour force. Educational changes brought in to keep up with these developments can have massive side‐effects which are largely unforeseen — dangerous surgical operations indeed. Is it not time we tried preventive medicine?
