The Northern Ireland Network for Education (Nine) Connect service has been officially launched. It is the first manifestation in the United Kingdom of Government plans for a national grid for learning.

The Nine Connect service will eventually provide 1,300 schools, library boards, training agencies and other educational establishments in Northern Ireland with communications such as electronic mail, conferencing and publishing. There is also a filtered and secure connection to the Internet.

The service is provided and managed by a private-sector company, DIALnet plc.
