It all began with an Induction Course. Like all other new members of staff I attended the one held for Academic Staff in September, 1972. The aims and objectives of the course had been set out at length, and at the end we spent a long while trying to decide whether or not they had been fulfilled. The group on this occasion was almost unanimous in its view that the end of a week of formal, albeit interesting, talks left them with mental indigestion and a numb bumb. They suggested more handouts, fewer lectures, more informal discussions, and a sherry party.
