In 1971, a major decision was taken which will continue to affect the training of building society staff for the next decade or more. This decision was the purchase of Fanhams Hall, Ware, an imposing country house set in acres of mature gardens. This conveniently situated building was to become the first permanent training centre of the Building Societies Institute. The Institute, in common with other professional bodies, was established to provide and maintain an organisation for the promotion of the educational, vocational and general development of persons engaged in the work of building societies. When this body was formed in 1934, a need for training and educating staff had become clearly apparent. Initially this need was met by holding ‘weekend schools’ at which delegates could be instructed and could exchange ideas and opinions.
