Those who live in the South are well aware of the spread of supermarkets. Well‐known family firms are being swallowed up to form groups and these in turn become merged with some aggressive giant whose only concern seems to be with pounds, shillings and pence. The supermarket trend is now spreading rapidly to the North and has already reached the major cities of Scotland. Large American and Canadian firms have come to compete and one of them has openly stated that it will be unable to find supermarket managers in Britain with the “dynamic” required, and so proposes to bring over five hundred of its own.
