An advance report of a wide‐ranging education study undertaken by the European Round Table in 1987 which was initiated on the premise that the competence of individuals and the workforce as a whole is a key element in corporate competitiveness. The task was to reveal the situation and differences of education from country to country in Western Europe. The major findings are discussed and recommendations aimed at improving and modernising the educational systems are given.
