The ESRC publication “Making the most of third sector research”highlights schemes and funding opportunities for researchers, third sector organisations and other users. This document could prove particularly useful for funding in the coming months amid rumours of the public purse being tightened thus forcing a reduction in funding to higher education institutions, particularly relating to scholarly research activities.

A new funding scheme from the ESRC is offering follow-on funding for previously successful ESRC applicants of bids and awards. The first call closed in January 2009 but there are 2 further calls closing on 28 May and then on 1 October 2009. Brief details are given below but further details can be obtained from the website: www.esrc.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/opportunities/current_funding_opportunities/FoF.aspx?ComponentId=27622&SourcePageId=23077

A new publication from the ESRC helps users to get round the website, which can often be quite cumbersome ploughing through all the many linked pages and particularly if funding opportunities are being sought. Furthermore, the ESRC are now encouraging more applications to funding be submitted via the Je-S Scheme, which is an online application system and potential submitters must obtain a username and password. “An introduction to ESRC Society Today including Tips and Tricks” can do downloaded at: www.esrc.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/Images/EST%20Induction%20Worksheet_tcm6-24541.pdf
