Significance
In May, Narendra Modi will make his first visit to China as India's prime minister. Beijing will have developed an understanding of the man, and his approach to China, from his time as chief minister of Gujarat and his early record since winning parliamentary elections in May 2014. Beijing and Delhi are both currently led by nationalist leaders, necessitating subtle diplomacy to keep relations stable.
Impacts
China-India ties will shape the geopolitical contours of the wider East Asia/South Asia region.
Territorial issues are intractable and at permanent risk of precipitating a crisis.
India will seek greater Chinese investment, especially in infrastructure; Beijing may well capitalise on this opportunity.
