Significance

Delhi seeks a workable balance in relations with Saudi Arabia and Iran just as Riyadh pursues the same with India and Pakistan. This equilibrium is becoming increasingly difficult and important to maintain as Pakistan's ties with Saudi Arabia (and, to some extent, the United Arab Emirates) sour while Iran stands poised to re-engage with the international community after the lifting of sanctions in January.

Impacts

Preserving its share of India's oil market will be Riyadh's main priority in bilateral ties with Delhi.

However, India will continue to diversify its energy partners.

Pakistan's civilian and military administration will balance their Saudi ties with those with China and Iran.

Delhi will expect rewards from Tehran for not severing bilateral ties while sanctions were in place.
