Subject
Russian defence procurement programmes.
Significance
The current defence procurement plan was intended to achieve a sweeping modernisation of the armed forces by 2020, but seven years in, the results are mixed. The pace of acquisitions has been slowed by constraints on defence industry capacity, an economic downturn and the end of cooperation with Ukraine.
Impacts
Defence companies will look to raise revenue by selling modern arms and aircraft abroad minus some cutting-edge technology.
Funding will be cut for expensive new platforms such as Lider-class nuclear-powered destroyers and fifth-generation strike aircraft.
The Syrian campaign will solidify funding for new weapons that have proved their worth.
