French policy towards Africa.

Significance

Culture, trade and the environment were at the centre of President Emmanuel Macron’s agenda on his recent tour of Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya on March 11-14. The goal was to position France as a significant partner for African nations outside Paris’s traditional Francophone sphere in West Africa.

Impacts

France will seek to reinforce economic links with Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most-populous country and a huge potential market.

Brexit would further increase the relative importance of France as an advocate on African issues in the EU.

Corruption allegations linked to French nationals and officials will undermine Macron’s diplomatic efforts.
