Significance
Some 200 Chinese fishing boats have converged on the island, which the Philippines claims are maritime militia -- fishing crews deployed by Beijing as irregular forces implementing its maritime policies.
Impacts
Maritime militia will increase in prominence as implementers of the maritime dispute policies of China and Vietnam.
Non-Leninist claimant states will not develop similar fishing militia organisations.
The Thitu Island community’s dependence on flown-in supplies will increase as the area available for fishing decreases.
