Significance

The scale of Zelensky's success is visible in his capture of all four macro-regions, and all but one province (Lviv). After the acrimony of campaigning, outgoing President Petro Poroshenko, who won 24.5%, accepted defeat gracefully, obviating the risk of disputes about the results and potential unrest.

Impacts

Russia's offer of citizenship to east Ukraine residents is an early challenge to Zelensky.

Although Russia considers Zelensky preferable to Poroshenko, it is too early to predict any warming in bilateral relations.

Parliament is likely to move to curb presidential powers, either separately or along with proposals for impeachment procedures.

Zelensky's team will be careful to avoid complicating relations with the IMF and may discard some pre-election populist messages.
