Significance
Leaders of the ‘Three Years Jotna’ (‘Three Years Is Up’) protest movement last week renewed calls for President Adama Barrow to step down. In December, thousands of Gambians took to the streets to demand the incumbent’s resignation this month, to comply with an opposition agreement made prior to the December 2016 elections. Barrow has vowed to stay on until 2021 and has registered a new party, the National People’s Party (NPP).
Impacts
Overhaul of the bloated security forces could be delayed until after the 2021 elections.
ECOWAS’s military contingent will remain a source of local hostility but important for overall security.
Worsening political stability could hurt the pivotal tourism sector.
