Liberian public protests.

Significance

Thousands of people took to the streets on January 6 in protest against President George Weah. Organised by the 'Council of Patriots', protesters have demanded that Weah implement various reforms and ensure accountability and transparency following several corruption scandals. Weah is struggling to convince that he can revive a stagnating economy and combat rising inflation.

Impacts

The relationship between government and civil servants could weaken further, resulting in an increasing politicisation of the bureaucracy.

The Central Bank's new leadership has promised to initiate necessary monetary reforms but regaining public trust will take time.

New banknotes may protect against counterfeiting but will be insufficient to improve public confidence in the banking sector.
